BROTHERHOOD OF MEN IN THE CHURCH
Scripture speaks powerfully about the unity and strength found in brotherhood. Psalm 133:1 declares, “Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! ” This isn’t just poetic language; it’s a call to action. True brotherhood is more than just a friendship—it’s about standing shoulder to shoulder in the trenches of life, encouraging one another, praying for each other, and sharpening each other as Proverbs 27:17 says: “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”
On May 3, 2025, IFGF Surabaya had the honor and privilege to have Ps. Jimmy Oentoro ministered to us in an all-men event hosted by IFGF Men, in collaboration with IFGF Marketplace, called “WALK AND TALK: A JOURNEY OF MANHOOD”.
We started by going for a 5K morning walk. Following the refreshing morning walk, we gathered together for an edifying talk by Ps. Jimmy on the topic of manhood.

“Being a male is a matter of birth. Being a man is a matter of choice.”

The role of men within the church is both unique and vital. Men are called to take leadership in many areas, not through domination, but by serving and setting an example of Christ-like humility and strength. It’s not about power, but it’s about responsibility, service, and accountability.
The Apostle Paul, in his letters, often addresses believers as brothers, urging them to live in unity and support one another (Romans 12:10, 1 Thessalonians 4:9). The brotherhood of men in the church does not have to be complicated. It starts with showing up—with being present. It grows through honest conversations, shared struggles, and moments of prayer. It’s found in Bible studies together, late-night texts of encouragement, and serving side by side.

Ps. Jimmy reminded us that as brothers in the church, we need to bring each other to Jesus and are called to carry and support one another. Life’s trials can be particularly challenging for men, who may sometimes feel isolated or reluctant to share their struggles. A brotherhood of men in the church is about being a safe place for each other. It’s about saying, “You’re not alone,” and meaning it. Brotherhood means celebrating each other’s victories and bearing each other’s burdens (Galatians 6:2). It means choosing unity over division, grace over judgment, and truth over passivity.
A strong brotherhood of men can also contribute to the church’s overall health. When men are united in their faith, the church becomes a more vibrant and effective witness to the world. Moreover, the effects of a strong brotherhood of men extend beyond the local church. Men who are deeply rooted in their faith and who actively live out the principles of brotherhood become role models for the broader community. They set examples of leadership, impacting their families, workplaces, and neighborhoods.

I believe men were never meant to walk alone. Jesus Himself surrounded Himself with twelve men, not just to teach them, but to live life alongside them. They laughed, ate, served, and suffered together. That wasn’t accidental—it was intentional. Brotherhood is part of God’s design.
I would like to encourage and challenge the men in the church: this is your call to rise. Your brothers need you. The younger generation needs your example. Don’t wait for someone else to initiate. Be the one who reaches out, who invites, who encourages.
Start small. Invite a man for coffee. Join a men’s group. Share your testimony. Listen without judgment. Pray with someone. We don’t need to be perfect—we just need to be present for our brothers.
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others,
as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.
(1 Peter 4:10 NIV)
