AEA General Assembly 2020
For the first time ever, AEA (Asia Evangelical Alliance) General Assembly 2020 was held online due to the Covid-19 pandemic. AEA is a movement with a vision to promote collaboration between churches to strengthen and broaden the Kingdom of God within Asia. This year the event was held from 17-18 November at 09.00 – 12.00 with the theme “Asian Church in the New Landscape”.
117 synode leaders, pastors and leaders from 20 countries participated in this year’s General Assembly. 14 people from the IFGF Apostolic Team and leaders took part in the event. IFGF is one of the 3 new members joining AEA this year together with VEA (Vietnam Evangelical Alliance) and PESAT.
In the assembly, one of the messages came from Ps. C.B. Samuel (Theological Advisor for Micha Global) which was taken from the book of 1 Peter 1&2 and Colossians 1&2. He talked about the similarities between churches today and the early churches, where the world is changing and the church experiences trials. Thus churches need to hold on tight to the most essential spiritual foundations:
1.Our identity in Christ as God’s chosen people
2.The Call to be Holy (Character)
3.The purpose of the Calling
4.Affirming the supremacy of Jesus (we are in the kingdom whose king is Jesus)
Another speaker, Ps. Tan Seow How from HOG Singapore as the second main speaker emphasized on 3 important points on “Intergenerational Leadership”:
- Youth are Leaders TODAY, not just tomorrow
- This is Our Home (Build your church like a home for young people)
- Youth Generation are reinforcement, not replacement
On the last day of the GA, the new committee for 2020-2024 was announced with Mr. Godfrey Yogarajah from Sri Lanka as the new chairman, replacing the former chairman Rev. Paul Ueki from Japan. The assembly was closed by Dr. Bambang Budijanto as AEA GA Secretary who reminded us that the Spirit of God will continue to work within Asia far beyond the event itself.
He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
